Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū / Banks Peninsula has a remarkably high proportion of rare and endemic plants found only on the Peninsula. This has lead to protection of the environments, species, and landscapes.

Today many of the special places of Banks Peninsula are protected in perpetuity by being reserves, parks, and covenants.
